CIPPENHAM
Cippenham is located just off Junction 7 of the M4 close to Dorney Reach, and Eton to the south with Slough to the east. It is, therefore, within easy commuting distance to London and Windsor with its many attractions for the visitor including, of course, Windsor Castle a home of the Royal Family. As Cippenham is close to the M4 London’s Heathrow Airport can be reached via Exit 4 of the motorway and takes approximately 20 minutes – traffic permitting.
Cippenham Green is a ward of the Slough Borough Council and is currently represented by three councillors, two labour and one UKIP. The word ‘Green’ in name of the ward was where cows were grazed in the early part of the 19th century. In the boundaries of the Borough of Slough this is the only ancient village green to be found.
Although Cippenham is actually a suburb of Slough it was originally in the county of Buckinghamshire with a history which is not immediately apparent to the visitor.
Cippan-ham was its old English name and Cippa actually meant homestead. In fact on modern maps there is still a reference to Cippenham Moat which is the place widely thought was where King Henry III had a palace in the 13th century. The Palace, it is believed and tradition has it, that it was located on the site of Cippenham Place farm.
